Tanzania's second-highest mountain rises out of Arusha National Park, so the walk starts among giraffe, buffalo and colobus monkeys with an armed ranger alongside. The summit ridge above the ash cone is dramatic, and many climbers use Meru to acclimatise before Kilimanjaro.
